  17. <p>     It was the sort of bittersweet tale Hans Christian Andersen
  18. might have spun. An old man with a vacant stare was discovered
  19. sitting in a wheelchair at a dog-racing park. Two attached
  20. notes identified him as an Alzheimer's patient in need of
  21. round-the-clock nursing care. Outrage and sympathy poured in
  22. from around the country, and complete strangers offered to take
  23. him in.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>     The old man will not long be dependent on the kindness of
  26. strangers. Accompanied by her sister-in-law, last week Nancy
  27. Myatt of Dickson, Tenn., flew to Portland, Ore., to be reunited
  28. with the man she recognized from news photographs as her
  29. long-lost father John Kingery. Myatt found Kingery at the
  30. Laurelhurst Care Center, a nursing home from which he had been
  31. removed in early March by her half sister Sue Gifford. Myatt
  32. explained that she lost touch with her father, a former
  33. autoworker, after he remarried in 1964 and just "slipped away
  34. from us." After a time, Myatt assumed he was dead. "It's
  35. something," says Myatt, "to think that you didn't have a dad,
  36. and now he's alive again."
  37. </p>
  38. <p>     As authorities continue their investigation of the
  39. abandonment, the saga of John Kingery seems destined for a
  40. heartwarming ending. Myatt and her siblings want to move Kingery
  41. to a Morgantown, Ky., nursing home so they can better watch over
  42. him. Says Myatt's brother Charles, a Morgantown resident: "We
  43. want to bring him back here, close to the family." Although he
  44. will probably never be able to grasp it fully, John Kingery has
  45. a lot of grandchildren and even great-grandchildren waiting to
  46. welcome him.
